Description

Nucci and Anaissie listed precautions for avoiding infection that can be taken by a severely immuncompromised patient with multiple myeloma. The authors are from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and the University of Arkansas.


 

Precautions include avoiding:

(1) unprotected sex

(2) people with fever, cough or other signs of infection

(3) someone with skin lesions consistent with Herpes simplex, Herpes zoster or other viral infection

(4) someone with infectious conjunctivitis

(5) someone with a recent receipt of a live virus vaccine (polio, Flu-Mist, other)

(6) someone with possible tuberculosis

(7) someone with hepatitis A

(8) someone with measles

(9) crowded places

(10) eating unwashed or undercooked foods

(11) drinking potentially contaminated water

(12) swimming in a public place or in stagnant water

(13) caving or outdoor activities with exposure to environmental pathogens

(14) working in jails, prisons, homeless shelters, day care centers and/or homes for the mentally disabled

(15) pets or animals who are potentially infectious

 

Protective measures:

(1) frequent handwashing, preferably with soap

(2) having good oral hygiene

(3) maintaining up-to-date vaccination (but not with live virus vaccines)

(4) planning trips to minimize potential exposures
