Description

A person traveling to an area endemic for avian influenza A H5N1 needs to take certain precautions to reduce the risk of infection.


 

Personal protective and health equipment to pack:

(1) masks

(2) hand soap

(3) alcohol based hand gels

(4) thermometer

 

Recommendations:

(1) Receive the current influenza vaccine at least 2 weeks prior to leaving for the affected region.

(2) Avoid all contact with poultry or wild birds.

(3) Avoid all contact with places where poultry or birds are kept or handled.

(4) Do not eat raw or undercooked poultry or eggs or any dish containing uncooked poultry components.

(5) Wash the hands with soap and water often, or use an alcohol hand gel.

 

If potentially exposed to avian influenza:

(1) Monitor body temperature and symptoms for the next 10 days.

(2) Do not travel if ill.

(3) Limit close contact with others.

(4) Wear a mask if contact with others is possible.

(5) Contact a health care provider if cough, fever, or shortness of breath develop.
