Description

Mining is a hazardous profession. Reducing the hazards requires consideration of the different type of injuries that can occur.


 

Traumatic injuries:

(1) crush injury from equipment, including rollover

(2) crush or burial in debris from collapse

(3) blunt or penetrating trauma

(4) blast injury

(5) elevator or vehicle accident

(6) physical assault (if mining for diamond, jewels or gold)

 

Respiratory damage:

(1) inhalation dust injury

(2) toxic gas release

(3) carbon monoxide from explosives, fire or machinery

(4) smoke inhalation

(5) hypoxia if entrapped

 

Hot environment related:

(1) heat stress

(2) dehydration

(3) electrolyte abnormalities

 

Other hazards:

(1) vibration from drills and machinery

(2) ocular foreign bodies

(3) hearing damage

(4) exhaustion

(5) malnutrition

(6) fire and burns

(7) toxic chemicals in water

(8) radiation (radon, uranium, other)

(9) infection (rabies, Histoplasmosis, rodent-associated, cellulitis)

(10) drowning
