Description

A patient who has undergone selective embolization of an organ or tumor may develop a postembolization syndrome afterwards. This is ascribed to an inflammatory response to the tissue necrosis.

Features of the postembolization syndrome:

(1) fever

(2) localized pain

(3) nausea and vomiting

(4) malaise and fatigue

Symptoms usually subside in 4-5 days.

Patients can be managed conservatively with hydration, antibiotics, analgesics, antipyretics and antiemetics.

Differential diagnosis for exclusion:

(1) infection of the infarcted tissue

(2) ongoing hemorrhage
