Description

The temporalis muscle may be mobilized for a patient undergoing craniotomy. Following surgery the temporalis muscle may not function properly, especially if the dissection was done in an aggressive manner..


Causes of the dysfunction:

(1) muscle atrophy

(2) muscle ischemia

(3) scarring

(4) denervation

(5) inadequate muscle tension

 

Clinical features may include:

(1) temporomandibular joint pain

(2) impaired mastication

(3) restricted mouth opening

(4) painful mouth opening
