A cranial nerve palsy can rarely occur following a vaccination. Typically, the palsy is transient.
Cranial nerve palsies reported:
(1) facial nerve (CN 7)
(2) abducens nerve (CN6)
(3) oculomotor nerve (CN 3)
(4) vagus nerve (CN 10)
Implicated vaccines:
(1) COVID19
(2) VZ
(3) influenza
(4) HBV
(5) smallpox
(6) pertussis
(7) measles
(8) DPT
Diagnostic features:
(1) onset of cranial nerve palsy after vaccination
(2) exclusion of other causes of the cranial nerve palsy (easier said than done)
