Description

Levack et al followed patients after sigmoidectomy for diverticulitis. They identified a number of symptoms in these patients. The authors are from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.


Patient selection: diverticulitis treated by sigmoidectomy

 

Symptoms in survivors:

(1) fecal incontinence (25%)

(2) fecal urgency (20%)

(3) incomplete emptying (21%)

 

Risk factors from logistic regression analysis:

(1) female sex (for all 3 symptoms, OR range from 1.3 to 2.3)

(2) preoperative abscess (for fecal incontinence, OR 1,4)

(3) diverting ileostomy (for fecal urgency, OR 2.1)

(4) postoperative sepsis (for incomplete emptying, OR 1.9)
