Description

The post-pulmonary embolism syndrome describes functional impairment following a pulmonary embolism. Additional studies can often refine the underlying diagnosis.


Patient selection: status post pulmonary embolism

 

Features of the post-pulmonary embolism syndrome:

(1) decreased exercise tolerance (with exercise limitation)

(2) persistent dyspnea

(3) disability with impaired quality of life

(4) occurrence > 3 months after the embolism, despite adequate anticoagulation therapy

 

Underlying conditions may include:

(1) chronic thromboembolic pulmonary disease (CTED)

(2) chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH)

(3) chronic heart failure with left-sided diastolic dysfunction

(4) valvular heart disease

(5) coronary artery disease

(6) morbid obesity

(7) COPD or other pulmonary disease

(8) other comorbid conditions
