Description

Turnbull et al studied patients who had an emergency readmission of a critically ill patient based on polypharmacy. This number of drugs that a person is taking can help to identify a patient at high risk for emergency readmission. The authors are from University of Edinburgh, Queen Margaret University Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University and the University of Dundee.

Patient selection: status post critical illness

Outcome: emergency readmission within 1 year

The more drugs that a patient has been taking then the greater the risk of an emergency readmission.

Parameters from Figure 4:

(1) number of monthly prescribed medications prior to index admission

probability of emergency readmission within 1 year =

= (-0.00009082 * ((number)^2)) + (0.01508 * (number)) + 0.3335
