Description

Maternal IgG antibodies can cross the placenta into a neonate's circulation. A neonate born to a mother with polyarteritis nodosa may develop the disorder as well.

Clinical features:

(1) mother with active polyarteritis nodosa during pregnancy

(2) presence of a vasculitis in the neonate

(3) absence of alternative explanations

(4) resolution after maternal immunoglobulin has been cleared (by 3 months of age)

The autoantibody in the neonate should be the same as the autoantibody in the mother. If most of the autoantibody is bound then the level of circulating autoantibody may be low.
