Carmo et al reported the Pneumonia Shock Score for evaluating a patient with pneumonia being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This can help to identify a patient who is more likely to die in the ICU. The authors are from multiple institutions in Brazil and the University of California at San Diego.
Patient selection: patient with pneumonia being admitted to the ICU
Outcome: death in the ICU
Parameters:
(1) age in years
(2) heart rate in beats per minute
(3) hematocrit percent
(4) white blood cell count per microliter
(5) serum sodium in mmol/L
(6) FIO2
(7) use of vasopressors
(8) Glasgow coma scale (used to measure obtundation)

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 10
• The mortality rate for a score of 0 to 2 was 9.3%
• The mortality rate for a score >= 3 was > 26%.
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve is 0.80.
