Austrian (and Osler) reported the constellation of Streptococcal pneumoniae pneumonia, meningitis and endocarditis. This may be associated with a poor prognosis unless treated aggressively.
Classic triad - Streptococcus pneumonia causing:
(1) pneumonia
(2) endocarditis
(3) meningitis
Bacteremia is typically present.
Historically this was more common in alcoholics and in middle-aged men. Other risk factors:
(1) unvaccinated status for Streptococcus pneumoniae
(2) asplenism
(3) immunosuppression
Complications:
(1) septic emboli
(2) stroke
(3) respiratory or other organ failures
