Description

Keenan et al reported the Plymouth Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Risk Score. This is the third version of the tool. The authors are from Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.


Patient selection: ankle immobilization in a cast or boot

 

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) body mass index (BMI) in kg per square meter

(3) ability to walk prior to injury or accident

(4) currently on oral contraceptive

(5) currently on hormone replacement therapy

(6) family history (parents, siblings) of deep vein thrombosis

(7) varicose veins

(8) comorbid disease requiring treatment (heart, lung, bowel, etc)

(9) abdominal surgery in the past 6 weeks

(10) active cancer

(11) past history of deep vein thrombosis

(12) past history of pulmonary embolism

(13) reproductive status

(14) Achilles tendon rupture

(15) complex lower limb surgery or pelvic surgery in past 6 weeks and advised to have prolonged DVT prophylaxis

(16) any other disease associated with thrombosis (thrombophilia)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 31

• If the score is >= 3, then should receive thromboprophylaxis.

• If the score is <= 2, then mobilize as able.
