Description

In general platelet transfusions are not needed in a child with dengue hemorrhagic fever. Pothagregada et al list indications for platelet transfusions in bleeding children. Patient selection: child with dengue fever who is bleeding

 

Indications for platelet transfusions:

(1) severe spontaneous bleeding

(2) severe thrombocytopenia (< 50,000 per µL)

(3) shock (severe dengue fever)

 

Mild to moderate bleeding alone is not an indication for platelet transfusions, especially when the platelet count is normal or only mildly decreased.
