Description

Thrombocytopenia is common in malaraia and may be multifactorial. Certain platelet parameters may correlate with severity of the malaria.

Patient selection: age > 18 years with malaria

Types of malaria: P. falciparum, P. vivax

Predictors of severe malaria:

(1) platelet count <= 50,000 per microliter

(2) plateletcrit <= 0.05%
