Description

If a continuous infusion is started with a bolus, then the plasma level will reach the steady state level more quickly. The plasma level during this rise can be estimated based on the patient's kinetic data.

plasma drug concentration in amount per volume at a given time =

= ((plasma concentration after the bolus in mg/L) * EXP((-1) * (elimination rate constant) * (time since the bolus))) + (target steady state concentration in amount per volume) * (1 - EXP((-1) * (elimination constant per hour) * (hours since starting the infusion)))

where:

• The target steady state concentration for the infusion is calculated in the previous section.

• An assumption is that the time of the bolus and the time of starting the infusion are the same.
