Description

PLA2R1 (phospholipase A2 receptor 1) is one of 2 naturally-expressed podocyte antigens. Antibodies to PLA2R1 are implicated in most cases of idiopathic membranous nephropathy.

Patient selection: idiopathic membranous nephropathy

Findings related to PLA2R1 in patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy:

(1) serum antibodies to PLA2R1

(2) presence of glomerular PLA2R1 deposits on indirect immunofluorescence

Some cases of idiopathic membranous nephropathy may be associated with antibodies to THSD7A (thrombospondin type-1 domain-containing 7A), also expressed as a podocyte antigen.
