Description

"Picking at bedclothes" is a sign that may be seen in a person facing imminent death.


Carphology = picking at bed clothes

 

Floccilation = picking at imaginary objects (floccus = small tuft of wool)

 

Features:

(1) continual grasping or fumbling with bed clothes

(2) appears to be directed towards some imaginary substance

(3) seen in patients who are seriously ill or delirious

 

The term Henry V sign refers to a description of the death of Falstaff in Shakespeare's play (Act II, Scene III: I saw him fumble with the sheets).
