Pastinaca sativa (Hobo Parsnip, Wild Parsnip) can cause a severe photodermatitis.
The root of the wild parsnip is edible.
Contact with the sap, leaves and/or stems can result in furocoumarins coating the skin. On exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light the patient may develop a first or second degree burn with blisters.
Active ingredient: furocoumarins/furanocoumarins
Late sequelae:
(1) cutaneous scars
(2) hyperpigmentation.
