Physiologic Definition of Walsh et al for Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD)

Time of assessment: 35 to 37 weeks corrected age

Criteria for bronchopulmonary dysplasia - one of the following:

(1) on positive pressure ventilatory support

(2) receiving supplemental oxygen with FIO2 > 0.3

(3) oxygen saturation < 88% during stepwise reduction in supplemental oxygen to room air

A patient was considered not to have bronchopulmonary dysplasia if able to maintain an oxygen saturation >= 88% for 60 minutes on room air.
