Description

Rossi et al reported a photonumeric grading scale for evaluating lip thickness and volume. This can be used to assess the effect of disease or the change after lip rejuvenation procedures. The authors are from Johnson& Johnson Consumer Products.

Exam: appearance of lip thickness using a photonumeric grading scale, using parallel polarized light if possible

The upper and lower lip are graded separately. Different reference photos are used for the upper and lower lip, since the lower lip usually has a greater thickness than the upper.

Reference photographs are taken with patient facing (1) forward and (2) rotated to the right 45°.

The volume of the lip correlates with the thickness grade.

If photographs are taken carefully of the patient, then machinie vision can be used to grade the lip thickness and can estimate the volume.
