Description

Moore et al used cluster analysis to identify 5 phenotypes in patients with asthma. The phenotypes can help guide management of a patient. The authors participate with the Severe Asthma Research Program (SARP) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Patient selection: asthma

Parameters:

(1) baseline FEV1 as percent of predicted

(2) maximum FEV1 after 6-8 puffs of albuterol as percent of predicted

(3) age of onset

Clusters 4 and 5 were associated with more severe disease. Cluster 5 is associated with fixed airflow (no change with albuterol).

Cluster 1 is associated with relatively mild atopic asthma.

Cluster 2 is associated with mild to moderate atopic asthma.

Cluster 3 is associated with late-onset non-atopic asthma.
