Description

Pitterle et al developed the Pharmaceutical Care Index (PCI) to assess pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy. The authors are from University of Wisconsin and the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison.

PCI =

= SUM(Z scores for 13 services given to eligible patients)

Services studied:

(1) unit dose

(2) intravenous drug admixture

(3) patient counseling

(4) monitoring

(5) clinical rounds

(6) pharmacokinetic consultations

(7) total parenteral nutrition

(8) cardiopulmonary resuscitation

(9) drug information services

(10) poison services

(11) inservice education

(12) evaluation of drug use

(13) clinical research

where:

• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation seems oddly out of place.

Parameters for Z score:

(1) mean percent of eligible patients receiving service for all hospitals being evaluated

(2) standard deviation in percent for all hospitals being evaluated

(3) percent at the pharmacy being assessed

Z score for service =

= ((percent at hospital) - (percent mean for all hospitals)) / (standard deviation)
