Zhang et al developed a prognostic index for a patient with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The authors are from the University of Chicago and First Hospital of Lanzhou University in China.
Patient selection: non-small cell lung cancer
Parameters:
(1) whole body metabolic tumor volume on PET/CT scan (MTV), as measure of metabolic tumor burden, in mL
(2) stage
Metabolic tumor volume is determined in a PET/CT scan as the volume of all metabolically active tumors using the PET-edge tool of the MIMvista software.
Stage
Points
I or II
0
III
0.424
IV
0.890
PVP index =
= (0.36 * LN(MTV whole body in mL)) + (points for stage)
Interpretation:
• minimum index: 0
• maximum index: determine by tumor volume, over 3 for a large tumor with metastases..
• The 5 year survival in atients in the lowest quartile was 58%, second quartile 26% and third and fourth quartiles less than 6%.
