Description

Qat (khat, kat) is a habit in certain parts of the world where the plant (Catha edulis) is grown. It is not uncommon for users to have excessive exposure to pesticides used to protect the plant.

Patient selection: qat (Khat, kat) chewer

Pesticide hazards associated with cultivation of Catha edulis:

(1) use of banned pesticides like DDT or lindane

(2) application of higher-than-recommended pesticide concentrations

(3) failure to wait the required period for harvesting after an application

(4) failure by the farmer to wash the plant after harvesting

(5) failure of the user to wash the plant before chewing the leaves

Chewing qat over a lifetime can place the person at a significant risk of exposure to a range of pesticides.
