Description

The pes anserine bursa is located between the proximal medial tibia and the insertion point of the 3 tendons (for the gracilis, sartorius, semitendinosus muscles). Inflammation of the bursa can be triggered by a number of factors.


Pes anserine is Latin for "goose foot", in reference to the 3 tendons.

 

Location of pain: medial knee and medial upper tibial region. The pain may be triggered by crossing one leg over the other.

 

Symptoms: pain, swelling, tenderness, erythema

 

Risk factors:

(1) being overweight or obese

(2) osteoathritis of the knee

(3) repetitive physical activities

(4) valgus positioning of the knee

(5) tightness of the hamstring muscles

(6) trauma to the leg

(7) diabetes mellitus
