Description

A patient who has developed a deep vein thrombosis may be at risk for permanent work-related disability.


Patient selection: venous thromboembolism

 

Factors that may contribute to disability:

(1) recurrent thromboembolic disease

(2) post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS)

(3) chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH)

(4) bleeding from anticoagulation therapy

(5) underlying condition contributing to the thrombosis

 

An unprovoked thromboembolism may have a higher rate of disability.

 

Features of the post-thrombotic syndrome:

(1) chronic limb fatigue and heaviness

(2) limb swelling

(3) pain

(4) paresthesias

(5) open venous leg ulcers

(6) reduced physical functioning
