Description

Biondo et al developed a Left Colonic Peritonitis Severity Score (PSS) to evaluate peritonitis following perforating lesions of the left colon. The score correlates with survival and can be used to compare outcomes for different patients. The authors are from the University of Barcelona in Spain.

Parameters for score identified by multivariate analysis:

(1) age

(2) ASA grade

(3) preoperative organ failure

(4) immunocompromised status

(5) ischemic colitis

(6) peritonitis stage

= SUM(points for all 6 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 6

• maximum score: 14

• The higher the score the greater the mortality rate.

where:

• Scores of 8 and 9 give similar mortality rates, as do 10, 11 and 12. It may be possible to combine scores to 5 levels (scores 6, 7, 8-9, 10-12, 13-14).
