Description

A donor subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulation who is positive for an opiate on drug testing needs to be evaluated for evidence of unauthorized use. This may include a physical examination by the Medical Review Officer (MRO) or other physician.


 

Findings on physical examination that may indicate unauthorized use:

(1) recent needle tracks

(2) behavioral or psychological signs of acute intoxication

(3) behavioral, physical or psychological signs of acute withdrawal

(4) clinical history of (a) unauthorized use or (b) use of a medication from a foreign country that could explain the positive test results

 

Signs of acute withdrawal may include (see section 32.16.03):

(1) nausea

(2) gooseflesh

(3) sweating

(4) restlessness and agitation

(5) lacrimation

(6) nasal congestion

(7) yawning

(8) stomach pain

(9) muscle aching

 

Failure by the donor to submit to the examination is a refusal for testing.
