Description

Challen et al reported the Pandemic Medical Early Warning Score (PMEWS) for triaging a patient with pandemic inflenza. One component of the patient assessment was the performance status. The authors are from the University Hospital for the South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust.


The score resembles other measures of performance and disability, such as the ECOG status.

(1) activity level

(2) ability for self-care (and activities of daily living, ADL)

where:

• It would be possible for a person who is normally active might be unable to do one or two activities of self-care. It would be unsual for such a person to be completely dependent.

• In the implementating status 5 assigned for either complete dependence or bed/chair bound.

 

The higher the status number the greater the disability and the need for rehabilittion.
