Description

The percentage of stroma in a colon cancer may impact prognosis. The main proponents for this marker aer from Leiden University in The Netherlands.


 

Patient selection: colon cancer without distant metastases

 

Factors associated with worse prognosis:

(1) high proportion of intra-tumor stroma (> 50%)

(2) loss of immunostaining for SMAD4 (protein related to stroma production)

 

The presence of both factors identified a high-risk group for mortality within 3 years.

 

The presence of increased stroma may be another indicator for more aggressive management,
