The percentage of stroma in a colon cancer may impact prognosis. The main proponents for this marker aer from Leiden University in The Netherlands.
Patient selection: colon cancer without distant metastases
Factors associated with worse prognosis:
(1) high proportion of intra-tumor stroma (> 50%)
(2) loss of immunostaining for SMAD4 (protein related to stroma production)
The presence of both factors identified a high-risk group for mortality within 3 years.
