Some patients with penile fracture may have a rupture of the urethra. This is considered a urological emergency.
Risk factors:
(1) older age
(2) high impact trauma
Presentation: as for penile fracture, plus hematuria
Urethral rupture is associated with:
(1) bilateral corpus cavernosum involvement (rather than unilateral).
(2) urine extravasation
Repair of the urethral rupture may not adversely affect functional outcome or complication rate provided it is done by a urologist experienced in the repair.
Complications of severe penile fracture include:
(1) penile curvature
(2) painful erection
(3) palpable nodule
(4) paresthesia
(5) erectile dysfunction
(6) problems urinating
