Description

The PEG pain measure is a brief pain measure derived from the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI). The authors are from Roudebush VA Medical Center (Indianapolis), Regenstrief Institute, Indiana University, Dartmouth Medical School, VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, RAND Corporation and UCLA.

PEG is an acronym for pain intensity, enjoyment of life and general activity interference.

Time interval for assessment: past week

Parameters:

(1) average pain intensity on a scale from 0 (none) to 10 (extreme)

(2) interference with enjoyment of life on a scale from 0 (none) to complete (10)

(3) interference with general activities on a scale from 0 (none) to complete (10)

total score =

= SUM(points for the 3 parameters)

PEG score =

= (total score) / 3

Interpretation:

• minimum total and PEG score: 0

• maximum total score: 30

• maximum PEG score: 10

• The change in the PEG score between evaluations indicates whether the pain is increasing, decreasing or staying the same.
