Description

Schlapbach et al developed a score for evaluating a pediatric patient with sepsis who are admitted to the intensive care unit. The authors are from University of Queensland and the Australian & New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) Paediatric Study Group.

Patient selection: sepsis and age < 16 years

Outcome: 30-day mortality

Parameters:

(1) PaO2 to FIO2 ratio

(2) ventilation during the first hour in the ICU

(3) cardiac arrest prior to admission

(4) blood lactate in mmol/L

(5) pupils

(6) systolic blood pressure by age and gender (below the 5th percentile)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 36

• The higher the score the greater the 30-day mortality.
