Sterken et al reported the Pediatric Pressure Ulcer Prediction and Evaluation Tool (PPUPET) for pediatric patients. This can help to identify a pediatric patient who may benefit from interventions to reduce the risk of skin breakdown. The authors are from DeVos Children's Hospital and Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Patient selection: pediatric
Parameters:
(1) mobility
(2) activity
(3) sensory perception
(4) moisture
(5) external devices (braces, traction, oxygen, ET tube, etc)
(6) friction/shear
(7) nutrition
(8) tissue perfusion and oxygenation
(9) skin conditions

total score =
= SUM(points for all 9 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 9
• maximum score: 26
• A score >= 18 is associated with a high risk for skin breakdown.
• A score of 3 in any category, or a score of 2 in nutrition, should prompt an intervention to reduce the risk.
