Paulson and Lichtenberg reported a simple frailty index. The authors are from the University of Central Florida and Wayne State University.
Patient selection: adult >= 65 years of age
Frailty findings:
(1) wasting with >= 10% weight loss over a 2-year period
(2) weakness (difficulty lifting 10 pounds or a heavy bag of groceries)
(3) slowness in getting up from a chair
(4) severe fatigue or exhaustion
(5) fall within the past 2 years
total number of findings =
= SUM(number of findings present)
Interpretation:
• minimum number: 0
• maximum number: 5
