Description

Gauglitz et al correlated serum cytokine levels with clinical outcomes in children with burns and inhalation injury. They identified changes in the cytokine levels associated with increased mortality. The authors are from Shriners Hospitals for Children and University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

Patient selection: pediatric burn patient with inhalation injury

Serum cytokine levels associated with mortality:

(1) marked elevation in serum IL-6 on admission (in thousands of pg/mL)

(2) elevated serum IL-10 on admission (in tens of pg/mL)

(3) elevated serum IL-7 on admission with decline on day 5 to 7 after admission

Limitation:

• The reference ranges for the various cytokines were not reported.
