Certain populations are at increased risk for viral hepatitis B (HBV). A patient in one of these groups should be screened for infection and/or vaccinated.
Patient selection: prevalence of HBV > 2%
Patients who should be targeted for HBV screening and/or vaccination:
(1) A person born in a country or region with a prevalence of HBV > 2% of the population.
(2) A person born in a developed country AND born to parents from a country or region with high prevalence AND not vaccinated against HBV as an infant.
(3) A person who is HIV-positive.
(4) A male who has sex with other men.
(5) An injection drug user.
(6) A household contact of a person with HBV.
(7) A sexual contact of a person with HBV.
