Description

Some patients are at greater risk of developing legionellosis than others.


 

Patient-related risk factors for legionellosis:

(1) cigarette smoking

(2) chronic lung disease (COPD, etc)

(3) corticosteroid therapy

(4) transplant recipients

(5) other causes of immunosuppression

 

Additional risk factors for hospital-acquired legionellosis:

(1) recent surgery

(2) Charlson Comorbidity Index >= 2

 

HIV infection was not associated with an increased risk but infections tended to be more severe (Stout and Yu).
