Although infectious aortitis is uncommon there are many pathogens that can cause it.
Common pathogens:
(1) Staphylococcus aureus
(2) Salmonella species
Other pathogens:
(1) Brucella species
(2) tuberculosis
(3) syphilis
(4) Clostridium septicum, other species
(5) Bartonella quintana (trench fever)
(6) Streptococcus pneumoniae
(7) Streptococcus Group A or B
(8) Coxiella burnetti (Q fever)
(9) Enterobacteriaceae (Campylobacter species, E.coli, Yersinia, Klebsiella)
(10) Neisseria gonorrhoeae
(11) Legionella pneumophila
(12) Enterococcus
(13) Prevotella intermedia
(14) Francisella tularensis
(15) Listeria monocytogenes
Fungal:
(1) Cryptococcus species
(2) Aspergillus
(3) Candida albicans
The number of potential pathogens is larger if
(1) there is a vascular graft/patch, aneurysm or wall defect
(2) if the patient is immunosuppressed.
