Paris syndrome refers to profound disappointment experienced by a tourist visiting Paris. The reality of Paris does not match the idealistic expectations. It is considered a type of culture shock.


Japanese tourists have been the group with the highest prevalence.

 

Features:

(1) high expectations for the experience of visiting a destination

(2) the destination is a profound disappointment

(3) the visitor develops emotional and/or physical ailments as a result

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) food poisoning

(2) infection

 

Post-Erasmus depression makes for an interesting comparison, with the onset of depression after return from travels where the experiences exceeded expectations.

 

Something similar can be seen in other situations where reality does not match expectations.
