Description

The Paris Consensus on Childhood Constipation Terminology (PACCT) was proposed by 8 pediatric gastroenterologists who met at the Second World Congress of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in Paris in July, 2004. Fecal impaction was one of the conditions defined.

Criteria for fecal impaction:

(1) severe constipation

(2) large fecal mass either in rectum or colon

(3) unlikely to be passed spontaneously (on demand)

The fecal mass may be detected by:

(1) physical palpation of the abdomen

(2) rectal exam

(3) imaging study (abdominal X-ray, ultrasound)

The description of fecal mass size is arbitrary since there are no standard method of measuring fecal volume.
