Parinaud described a clinical syndrome that can be seen in cat scratch disease.
Patient selection: infection with Bartonella henselae
Core clinical findings:
(1) conjunctivitis or skin lesions adjacent to the eye
(2) preauricalar lymphadenopathy
Other findings of cat scratch disease may include:
(1) facial nerve paresis
(2) cervical and submandibular lymphadenopathy
(3) neuroretinitis
The diagnosis is usually made based on:
(1) exclusion of other diagnoses
(2) serum serologies against Bartonella henselae
(3) history of cat exposure
(4) presence of bacteria on Warthin-Starry stain in aspirate
