A parent may kill his/her child (filicide) for several reasons.
NOTE: Filicide overlaps with infanticide and neonaticide.
Motives may include (from Friedman):
(1) fatal maltreatment (physical abuse, neglect, etc)
(2) unwanted child (or unable to cope)
(3) partner/spouse revenge
(4) altruistic
(5) acute psychosis
Additional:
(1) accidental (while intoxicated, other), not part of fatal maltreatment
(2) murder-suicide (may not fit into revenge, altruistic or psychotic)
