Description

McPherson et al developed a survey instrument for patient satisfaction with the care given in a pediatric intensive care unit. This can provide valuable feedback on the perceived quality of care delivered. The authors are from Baylor College of Medicine and the Texas Children's Hospital.

The instrument consists of 24 statements.

Positively directed questions: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 23, 24

Negatively directed questions: 5, 9, 11, 12, 17, 21, 22

Pairs of opposite questions: 4 and 11, 5 and 19, 9 and 14, 22 and 24

Subscores:

(1) hospital environment (6): 1, 3, 5, 7, 13, 19

(2) patient care (9): 2, 4, 6, 8, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18

(3) communications (9): 9, 10, 12, 14, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24

parent satisfaction score =

= SUM(points for all 24 questions)

Interpretation:

• minimum total score: 24

• maximum total score: 120

• The higher the score, the greater the expressed satisfaction.

percentage along spectrum =

= ((satisfaction score) – 24) / (120 – 24) =

= ((satisfaction score) – 24) / (96)

Performance:

• reliability coefficient (Cronbach alpha): 0.8275

• good test-retest reliability

Limitation:

• Separating responses by single integers may not adequately indicate the intensity of the parent's feelings.
