Description

When a person drinks paraquat (or vomits it), some of the pesticides comes into contact with tongue and oral mucosa, causing a toxic mucositis/glossitis.


Chemical: N,N'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridiunium dichloride

 

Clinical findings:

(1) burning of the mouth with pain

(2) swelling of the tongue

(3) erythema progressing to painful erosions and ulcers

(4) edema of the oral mucosa

(5) excessive salivation

 

The base of the ulcers may show yellowish necrotic debris.

 

Other clinical findings:

(1) nausea and vomiting

(2) abdominal pain

(3) renal failure

(4) toxic hepatitis

(5) dysphagia

(6) acute alveolitis
