A burn patient may develop paranasal sinusitis.
Risk factors:
(1) pre-existing sinusitis
(2) inhalation injury
(3) nasotracheal intubation
(4) greater number of days on the ventilator
The diagnosis may be missed or delayed if:
(1) the patient is unconscious or heavily sedated
(2) the diagnosis is not considered
Pathogens may include Staphylococcus aureus or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
