Description

A number of comorbid conditions are seen in patients with paracoccidioidomycosis. These may affect the risk of acquiring the infection and may impact management.

Comorbid conditions associated with paracoccidioidomycosis:

(1) current or past history of smoking

(2) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

(3) current or past alcohol abuse

(4) HIV disease

(5) other infection (tuberculosis, Chagas disease, strongyloidiasis, leprosy)

(6) malignant tumor

The fungal lesions may be confused with one of the comorbid conditions, and vice versa. It is important not to assume anything.
