Description

Papillary Urothelial Neoplasm of Low Malignant Potential (PUNLMP) is a noninvasive urothelial neoplasm with an excellent prognosis. It corresponds to Grade 1 urothelial carcinoma in the 1973 WHO classification.

Features:

(1) papillary urothelial proliferation

(2) most common on the lateral or posterior bladder wall near the ureteral orifices

(3) noninvasive

(4) papillae are discrete and slender without fusion

(5) multilayered urothelium with no or minimal cytologic atypia

(6) low Ki-67 labelling index (< 4.4)

It differs from the urothelial papilloma in having a urothelium that is thicker than normal.

Non-invasive low-grade urothelial carcinoma shows a greater variation in architectural and cytologic features.
