Parasites are an uncommon cause of panniculitis but should be considered if certain findings are present.

Parasitic infections associated with panniculitis include:

(1) gnathostomiasis

(2) schistosomiasis

(3) leishmaniasis (cutaneous, visceral)

(4) Chagas disease (Trypanosoma cruzi)

(5) acanthamoeba

(6) toxoplasmosis

(7) larva migrans (toxocariasis)


Reasons to suspect a parasitic infection:

(1) risk factors for parasitic infection

(2) presence of parasitic lesions elsewhere

(3) eosinophilic panniculitis

(3) granulomatous panniculitis

(4) presence of a structure consistent with egg, larva or worm
